What's this all about?
Most of science is publicly funded, yet that same public has to pay again to actually access those results. The idea of making all that research output available to all is widely supported, yet nobody is in a position to make a move to open access journals happen:
- The big publishers earn handsome revenues on subscriptions to scientific journals that they would like to maintain
- Universities assess the performance of their researchers by the reputation of the journals they publish in — and the oldest, most reputable journals still require subscriptions
- Researchers are thus dependent on publishing in those journals to be able to advance their career
- Librarians have to keep purchasing those subscriptions to provide access to top research
